About Max Sugar

After a longstanding interest in art, which I fulfilled by doodling, visiting galleries and museums, collecting a few pieces, and thinking about taking oil painting classes, I decided that I’d better get going or I’d never get started.  I had practiced child psychiatry in New Orleans for many decades, and figured that retirement might not be decades away, so I’d “better make hay while the sun shines.”  
 
This led me to take night classes for several years, studying drawing, composition and representational oil painting at Tulane University and the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts.
 
My focus shifted when I became aware of the Henry Hensche approach to impressionism painting. Hensche followed in Monet’s footsteps, emphasizing the light key and the full spectrum of color.  He taught this for forty years as director of the Cape Cod School of Art.
 
The search to learn this approach to impressionism led me to plein air painting with instruction and workshops with Hensche students:

My work includes landscapes, seascapes, portraits, and still-lifes done in oils, giclees and gouaches.
 
I’ve had the good fortune to be in a number of exhibits in a variety of locations.
